The Literacy and Language Institute is focused on early literacy at a global scale.
The mission of the Literacy and Language Institute is to provide research-based, affordable resources so all children read, speak, and write with confidence and achieve their full potential in life.
When teachers are provided with just-in-time insights into how well each student is progressing on their path to literacy—including identifying the gaps—they can focus on the right remedy. Our programs provide teachers with tools they need to assess literacy gaps, and the resources to bridge them, in any language.
We bring administrators and policy-makers into the conversation so everyone is looking at the same data. We propose scalable, affordable solutions with measurable outcomes reported in real-time. And we work to continually improve results through on-the-ground research.
“An informed public depends upon literacy and language:its good use, conception, comprehension and incorruptibility.”
― Barbara Chase-Riboud
Our model for global literacy is affordable, accessible, multilingual, and scalable. Through a virtuous cycle that supports educators at each step, we make sure teachers, parents, administrators, and the students themselves, are included.
Our approach is based on three critical touch points:
1 - Identify Literacy Gaps
We provide an easy-to-use literacy tool that measures and reports critical literacy outcome data in real time to inform reading instruction. The tool, can be used in low bandwidth environments, and in any language.
2 - Resource Solutions
We search for resources that support teachers and meet students exactly wherever they need help. We connect resources with real-time assessments so that educators can easily adjust instruction based on student outcomes.
3 - Research Outcomes
No solution is perfect. We work with researchers skilled in educational pedagogy to examine both processes and outcomes to guide administration and policymaking and inform future program development.
We implement our initiatives through research anddevelopment of tools and resources that have demonstrated impact. We then work with educational collaboratorsin diverse contexts throughout the world to implement and ultimately scale. Our early initiatives include:
R.E.A.L. Reader literacy diagnostic tool providesjust-in-time early literacy outcomes in any language on each student, class, orcohort at scale.
iMlango Project, Kenya, through a partnership withsQuid, registered over 250,000 students, offered invaluable experience instudent attendance monitoring.
